RollingStone: Radiohead’s ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ Album Is a Haunting, Stunning Triumph

radiohead-moonshapedNearly nine years after Radiohead gifted In Rainbows on unsuspecting fans in 2007, their seismic, no-label, price-point-be-damned surprise release has been co-opted by an exhaustive number of major-label artists. This year alone has seen pop royalty like Kanye, Rihanna and Beyoncé springing albums on their fans, and in the past 48 hours James Blake and Death Grips have also unleashed new albums. Radiohead’s ninth album, A Moon Shaped Pool, popped into view a few hours ago and for a band that once pleaded for “no surprises,” Pool’s most thrilling surprise isn’t its Mother’s Day release, but that Radiohead’s least rock-oriented album in the 21st century doubles as its most gorgeous and desolate album to date.

The opening line from one of Prince’s most beloved songs has sparked a tribute to the late icon, set to air on radio stations worldwide tomorrow (May 4).

KCMP (89.3 The Current) Minneapolis has invited stations to fete the legendary Minneapolis native by joining in a simulcast of Prince’s version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which he wrote in the mid-1980s and which Sinead O’Connor took to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in 1990; Prince’s version reached No. 62 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in 1994.

KCMP, and others, will air Prince’s recording of “Nothing” at exactly 5:07 p.m. CT (6:07 ET/3:07 PT) tomorrow. Why that moment? It marks “7 hours and 13 days” since Prince’s April 21 passing, referencing the song’s famous opening lyric. “It’s been 7 hours and 13 days, since you took your love away,” Prince’s version begins. “I go out every night and sleep all day, since you took your love away …”

Jazz Fest attendance figures dip due to rain

nola_jazz16NEW ORLEANS – Rain wreaked havoc on the second weekend of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which led to a drop in overall attendance this year, organizers said Tuesday.

Festival organizers said the crowd numbered 425,000 for the entire event, nearly the smallest crowd in five years.

It compares to 460,000 fans for 2015 – the highest attendance total since 2005.

The large crowds in 2015 (particularly on a day which saw huge crowds for both Elton John and Ed Sheeran, performing on opposite stages at the same time) prompted some safety changes to this year’s event. That included the installation of bleachers near the Acura and Congo Square stages to offer better seating options and prevent crowds from using chairs, blankets and tarps to lay claim to space.
